Spode Works Closed,2
18 January 2010
I promised some more images of the work in the Spode Works Closed series, so here goes.... Above, Italian bowl found in the factory, on one of the workers tables. Had clearly been used for kiln wash or something similar. A beautiful ghostly flaking on the bowl interior surface was the result of re-firing, and a heavier surface on the underside.
In another section of the factory I found a pile of kiln damaged rectangular casserole dishes. Presumably these would normally be trashed immediately, but somehow on the last day of the factory’s working life, they were left next to the kiln. I simply applied a Spode Closed logo to the inside pattern (and as with other objects in the series - documentary information and stamps on the base - as above). In another area I found unfinished casseroles - half decorated. Some I just fired (with Spode Closed logo). One had half a border but no interior scene - in this I placed a print of the place I found the kiln damaged forms. More another day.....
